May 2020: Anywhere Blvd Feature

Hannah Smoking, Art Trip, Hardenbergstraße, Berlin, Germany March 2019
Art trips are one of my favourite aspect of teaching. It’s great to get out of the studio or the classroom and be somewhere different. It’s an opportunity to get to know your students and see exciting places and things.
I’ve always been thankful of experiencing teaching and especially teaching something I love. I learn a great deal and it’s always a two way street, education goes both ways.
This is another project in its infancy, although I’ve been photographing students for six or seven years now. I have some new work to show from this series and hope to build on it in coming years.

Eddie & Lola, Milk, Oxford, 2017
The twins are four now so this feels like a long time ago. Babies change and grow so quickly that I wanted to keep some record for my nieces, nephews and my own kids. As a young boy I love rummaging through boxes of old family snap shots and with most images being digital these days I didn’t want the kids in my family to miss out on experiencing physical photographs. This is a long term project that may splinter into other sections for now I’m just documenting what’s happening with the children around me. I’ve just started the process of trying to make sense of it all. When I can find the time in between children, work and life.

George, Carlisle, 2016
I've been photographing the kids in my family for nearly five years now. This is a portrait of my nephew George. It's a very special photograph for me. This image marks a change in my approach and a realisation that I could photograph my family the way I worked on my own projects. There are seven kids across my family that are from different areas of the country and I want to keep photographing them growing up throughout their lives. This is an ever changing world and like all parents I'm anxious and worried about our children's future. George has now just turned 10, he looks so young in this portrait. My daughter now wears this hoody, even though it's way too big for her. Time moves so quickly!

Jon, No Silliness, Cascais, Portugal, August 2018
I’d taken a number of portraits that holiday. When I looked at the photographs, on my return, I noticed Jon's tattoo and it seemed quite fitting to use this as the title of the image. It was our first holiday together, as friends with babies and young children. Times had changed for all of us now. As always, much fun was had by everyone but "No Silliness” was always in the back of our minds. Everyone so very much aware of their new, wonderful, role and responsibility”

Aug 2017: Life Framer 'Street Life'

I'm very pleased that the above image was selected by Magnum Photographer David Alan Harvey for the Life Framer 'Street Life' competition. You can see more information here

"Matt’s portrait of three young boys against a busy urban backdrop, from his series ‘To & From the North Circular’, paints a powerful cultural picture of growing up in a suburban landscape. The boys sit precariously on the edge of this steel bridge – a small act of rebellion, of finding recreation in a dull world not designed for them – and I’m drawn to their expressions, to a maturity that belies their age. Perhaps those faces are a consequence of growing up in such a harsh, concrete setting. It’s a wonderful frame from a fascinating series that explores the essential blight of this road network on the communities it passes through."

Nov 2016: Photograd Spotlight, Jon Tonks

I'm delighted to have been selected in Photograd Spotlight feature by the brilliant Jon Tonks, thank you for your kind words.

"Matt’s work is very solid and graphically interesting, and To & from the North Circular is a very appealing body of work. An A-road could be considered a rather unusual starting point for a project, however, it’s testament to taking a relatively simple idea and allowing it to flourish into a great selection of photographs - the behemoth lump that is 27.5 miles of concrete anchors the work to a geographical location for the audience to understand and relate to, tying it together and resulting in a wonderful series."

I'm very pleased to have been asked to show work and to be featured in the spotlight selection is wonderful. Some lovely comments on my North Circular project!

Of The Afternoon, Independent Curator

- Christine Santa-ana:

"Matt MacPake’s series To and from the North Circular is an example of how well an original idea can work. It could so easily be a literal interpretation, depicting traffic and pollution. Instead, the series is vibrant, full of light and seemingly tranquil."

Documentary & Portrait Photographer - Nick Ballon :

“My second pick is Matt MacPake project on the 'dreaded' North Circular. It was hard to pick a single image from this as I think the project needs to be seen as a whole but I thought he captured the essence of such a banal subject like a unloved road very well.”

Very happy to have work involved in the Brighton Photo Biennial, through WERK Collective

As it reads on the website:

In partnership with Brighton Photo Biennial and Joburg Photo Umbrella, The Photocopy Club made an open call to photographers of all ages and ability to form collectives with their friends, families and peers, and to submit works on the theme of “community”.

Photographers around the world submitted black and white copies of their work and created a “giant collective”, exhibiting both here in Brighton and in Johannesburg.

Matt Martin from The Photocopy Club explains, “We asked people to come up with a collective name and make individual or group images that work around the theme of community. For example: music, religion, sport, art, sex, politics, to think about the cities they live in and the communities living within it.”
